Directed By: S. Surendranath Shakespeare#39;s famous play, The Merchant of Venice is often interpreted as the tragedy of Shylock, the pawnbroker. While most critics agree that Shakespeare portrayed Shylock in accordance with the prejudice against Jews prevalent in those days considering them stingy and Christ killers; some beg to differ. The last scene of the play shows a defeated Shylock leaving the city of Venice. This is seen as a piteous portray by modern interpreters of the work. This play tells the story of Merchant of Venice from the perspective of Shylock. Price: Rs 200 Tickets available on Bookmyshow.com

2 New Menus To Check Out

$

When it comes to food, we get our kicks mainly from two things – familiarity and novelty. Now that may sound contradictory, but both comfort food and unexpected culinary surprises work for us. That is why, new menus from old favourites give us the chance to have the best of both worlds. So when two of Bangalore’s favourite eateries went in for a menu revamp, we went in for a very close look. YAUATCHA, MG ROAD The only outpost of a Michelin Star rated restaurant in the city is always pushing culinary boundaries and on the occasion of their 5th anniversary, they’ve revamped a major portion of the menu. Don’t worry, your favourite cocktails and tea brews are still intact. The dim sum section though sees 18 newbies. We began the Oriental feast with Spicy Pork Wonton (Rs 295) that comes drenched in soy based soup tempered with sesame. Next was the crunchy Mushroom Roll (Rs 425) along with the overpowering smells of the sea courtesy the Hargau (Rs 425) filled with juicy prawns and garnished with caviar. The Sesame Pork Buns (Rs 450) were a delight with buns that were toasted to perfection, locking the flavours of the meat within, but our favourites were the star shaped Lobster Dumpling (Rs 625) topped with flavourful tobiko caviar and the fiery Spicy Hargau (Rs 425) bursting with tender prawn. The main course too has a plethora of fresh rice bowls and noodles, but after all the dim-sumptuous, we opted for a light course of Port Kelong Style Prawns (Rs 950) – crispy fried jumbo prawns tossed in soy sauce and served with mantou bread rolls that come in sharing portions. The Pork Belly Yellow Bean Sauce (Rs 1,555) is another new dish on the menu we were drooling over. And finally, for dessert, we recommend the Pear and Almond Tart (Rs 375) with a dose of fresh fruit and nuts. Price: Rs 2,100 for two Timings: Noon to 11 pm (Sunday to Thursday); noon to midnight (Friday and Saturday) SODABOTTLEOPENERWALA, LAVELLE ROAD Bangalore’s very own Parsi staple is now bringing in even more delicious food from the Irani hinterland with adorable Bawa twists to dish names. The cocktails have been tempered down with the likes of Bombay Julep (Rs 220) – whisky infused with jardaloo aka apricot and honey served with an overdose of ice and a lone orchid – that’s ideal for a balmy day or the swoon worthy Maushi Chi (Rs 230) with its citrus twang of pineapple and a shot of tequila. The Adu Tedhu Babycorn Fry (Rs 185) makes for a good bar eat. The mega-stars though are the Parsi Style Jumbo Prawns (Rs 895) – marinated prawns served with a coconut based curry and a kulhad of rice – clearly an influence of the coastal Parsis as well as the Tarela Rainbow Trout (Rs 625) that has Himalayan river trout marinated with spices in a rather Mangalorean style. The Bambaiyya Chicken Biryani (Rs 445) is a dose of nostalgia for displaced Mumbaikars, while old staples like the Berry Pulao (Rs 365 onwards), Salli Boti (Rs 455) and Dhansak (Rs 395 onwards) are still around. The dessert section has many surprises in-store, alas we had space to try just one and settled for the Matunga Coffee Cake (Rs 165). Matunga is a locality in Mumbai mostly populated by Tamilians, so needless to say, the filter coffee there is excellent. This deconstructed cake cum mousse with a dose of Kahlua and crispy biscuits managed to bring back the aroma and taste of filter kappi on a rainy day. Need we say more? Price: Rs 1,800 for two Timings: Noon to 11 pm (Sunday to Thursday); noon to 1 am (Friday and Saturday)

Diwali may have gone by but the hangover of unbridled shopping takes some time to pass. So, if you are feeling pangs of withdrawal symptoms from relentless shopping, we can give you something healthy to focus on – three new shopping places in Bangalore that totally deserve your attention! Warp Weft Fabric Gallery, Kumara Krupa Road For those who do not know, Warp Weft is a fabric producing company that was launched in 2013 – they specialise in accumulating the rich natural fabrics of India and also, in producing top-quality digital silks. Let us spare you more tiresome details and get straight to why we find their first flagship boutique in Bangalore so very interesting. It is because this store, that is being called the Fabric Gallery, has a massive collection of different kinds of fabrics and bespoke tailoring at your service. You can come into the store, pick the fabric you like, get free advice from the in-house designers, and get your outfits stitched to measure; the store also provides dry cleaning for its own products to ensure they last for a longer period of time. Another interesting aspect of this store is its collection of shoes – made to order from classy Italian leather, handmade and often DIY; that is, you get to design your own shoes as per your preference. Cost: Rs 3,500 onwards Timings: 10.30 am to 8 pm For details, click here Magari, Indiranagar Each of us is different and thus, we all have our favourite chairs in our family homes. Well, the retro-chic chairs you see at this new furniture and home décor store will give you serious chair-goals for 2017. And we haven’t even reached the velvety mushy couches yet. Looking at their regal burgundy couch gives a fresh perspective to the term ‘couch potato’; with that beauty in our kitty, we don’t mind the tag! Each piece of furniture at the store has a story to tell – be it the vintage-looking throw cushions that go with a very contemporary chair or Givenchy furnishings upholstering the bed, every article in the store is part of an immaculate design. The icing on the cake comes from the rugs by Rug Republic – the kitschy Bilbao, being our favourite; and pretty patterned wooden flooring from Parador. Cost: Rs 3,000 onwards Timings: 11 am to 9 pm For details, click here Nappa Dori, Whitefield Are you one those old-school Bangaloreans, who mentally tune out of conversations revolving around Whitefield for the fear of contracting traffic jams? Here is a wakeup call; Nappa Dori is just another new brand on the ever-increasing list of brands available only in Whitefield. You might have already had a brief rendezvous with this leather accessories label on your trips to the capital, but here is your chance to explore their products for a long haul; worth a try, we would say, even if it comes at the cost of taking that exhausting drive to Whitefield and back. More than the clichéd backpacks and luggage with imprints, we fell for the classy stationary here – leather capped-pencils, neatly bound notebooks and metal bookmarks; a book lover’s cravings will be met for sure. There is plenty more that the travel-savvy can explore, including measuring tapes, looking glasses and overnight travel cases. Cost: Rs 800 onwards Timings: 11 am to 8 pm
